Hanns Eisler in Conversation with Hans Bunge

Performance, Music and Cultural History

The long overdue translation of this immensely important and most personal book about Hanns Eisler has been translated by Sabine Berendse and Paul Clements into English and will be published in March 2012. In these conversations, which took place between 1958 and 1962, Eisler offers a compelling and absorbing account of his and Brecht’s period of exile in Europe and the USA between 1933 and 1947, and of the quality of artistic, social and intellectual life in post-war East Germany. Eisler provides illuminating and original insights into Brecht’s work and ideas and gives an entertaining first-hand account of his friend’s personality and attitudes. Fifty years after Eisler’s death and fifty five years after Brecht’s, the conversations are published in English for the first time.

In addition to the book, the translators have created a dramatic reconstruction of extracts from the conversations illustrated with images and brief original recordings of Eisler’s music.
